Stem Cell Rescue
Yesterday, Brady underwent a “stem cell rescue”- sounds more serious than it was. It was planned last week that he would be admitted yesterday and be given a transfusion of a bag of his stem cells. We would not know until that day if it was overnight or not. If you recall, they harvested his stem cells in early September- they were able to get 5 bags which is really great!! He will be admitted for stem cell transplant sometime during the week of 3/4/13- the Doctors did not want him going into transplant being neutropenic which is why they gave him a bag of his stem cells. The cells should find their place & start doing their job in about 2 weeks.
We arrived at Children’s yesterday and he was in a room by 1pm. After hydration and premeds the stem cell infusion lasted about 45 minutes. He had no side effect or allergic reactions and we were able to go home around 5:30pm!!
When he goes in for transplant, he will be given chemo during the first 4 days he is there they count down from Day 7 then on Day 0 he will receive his transplant which will be exactly what happened yesterday… an infusion of his stem cells.
Brady has been feeling pretty good overall. This weekend he had a chance to get out in the snow and help shovel. He LOVED it!! A little moody here & there, but who can blame him. He’s been through more than anything I could ever imagine facing. We are so proud of him- he is our hero!
